LG Nexus 4 vs iPhone 5 vs Galaxy S3: Best Of The Best

By  |

The Samsung Galaxy S3 was brought out last May and it went on to become a best-seller on the smartphone market. This was followed by the Apple iPhone 5 in September and then in November came the LG Nexus 4. So which is the best of these devices?

LG Nexus 4 vs iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3

The LG Nexus 4 comes with the Qualcomm 1.5GHz processor of Qualcomm, while the Apple iPhone 5 has the A6 dual core 1.2GHz processor, and the Samsung Galaxy S3 has the Exynos quad core processor internationally and in the US it has a dual core. While the Apple iPhone 5 has the slowest chip, it does happen to be twice the speed of the Apple iPhone 4S. The LG Nexus 4 offers the best of both worlds with 2GB of RAM and quad cores. With the Samsung Galaxy S3 you get 1GB of RAM and four cores or 2GB of RAM and dual core. The winner here has to be the LG Nexus 4.

The LG Nexus 4 has Jelly Bean 4.2, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with 4.1 and the Apple iPhone has iOS 6. If you want an OS that is streamlined then you would have to go with the Apple iOS. However Android offers customisation and while both the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the LG Nexus 4 have Android, the LG Nexus 4 will be the first to get updates. Therefore this device may be the best choice. The OS is down to personal preference and so it has to be classed a draw between the Apple iPhone 5 and the LG Nexus 4.

The LG Nexus 4 comes with the True HD IPS display of 4.7 inches which has 318ppi and a resolution of 1280 x 768p, while the Apple iPhone 5 has the 4 inch display and a resolution of 1136 x 640p. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has the Super AMOLED display that has a resolution of 1280 x 720. All of the displays are superb and the best will be down to personal choice. The IPS display offer colours that are the most realistic, while some say that the Super AMOLED displays are over saturated. The LG Nexus has the larger of the IPS screens and so it wins in my book.

You may be able to get around 15 hours of talk time if you choose the LG Nexus 4, thanks to the large 2100mAh battery. The Samsung Galaxy S3 on the other hand, along with the Apple iPhone 5 have around 8 hours of battery life. That’s what the manufacturers say of course. When tested by AnandTech they put the Apple iPhone 5 as the winner, with the Samsung Galaxy S3 in second place and the LG Nexus 4 in last place.

In regards to weight the LG Nexus 4 comes in at 129 grams and is 133.9mmx68.7mmx9.1mm, the Samsung Galaxy S3 comes in at 133 grams and is 136.6×70.6mmx8.6mm. The Apple iPhone 5 is a mere 112 grams and is 123.8mmx58.6×7.6mm. When it comes down to looks the Apple iPhone 5 is the winner, with the LG Nexus 4 following close behind. However as the Apple iPhone 5 is the thinner and lighter it wins.

Both the LG Nexus 4 and the Samsung Galaxy S3 have support for NFC, while the Apple iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S3 both have LTE. If you want both of these then clearly you will have to go with the Samsung Galaxy S3.

The LG Nexus 4 has the 8 megapixel camera, which comes with 1080p video and has autofocus. There is also a camera of 1.3 megapixels on the front. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has an 8 megapixel camera too and this had LED flash and autofocus, with a camera of 1.9 megapixel on the front. The Apple iPhone 5 has an 8 and 1.2 megapixel camera. All cameras have their good and bad points. The LG Nexus 4 comes with PhotoSphere, the Apple iPhone 5 is superb in low light and the Samsung Galaxy S3 takes video and photos together. The Apple iPhone 5 has the best BSI sensor and so it wins since we’re looking at it from a hardware perspective here.

The bottom line is that the Apple iPhone 5 is the easiest of the devices to use and it happens to be the best looking. On the other hand the LG Nexus 4 comes with the cheapest price tag and hence the best value as it has great hardware. If you want a superb all-round device then it has to be the Samsung Galaxy S3 as it comes packed with a good balance of all the features and it has a price tag that is middle of the road.
