Fans of jailbreaking have been hoping that the untethered jailbreak for iOS 6 would be released in time for Christmas. Along with this they want to know how they can install Cydia on the Apple iPhone 4S and iPhone 5. So where do we stand on the untethered jailbreak? Is it close or should people install iOS 6.0.2?
iPod touch & iPhone iOS 6 untethered jailbreak news
At the moment there has been some progress made in finding exploits by the iPhone Dev Team. However this progress is only for the Apple iPhone 4 and 3GS, along with the iPod Touch 4G. If you have these devices then you can get Redsn0w, install it on your PC and then plug in the device and follow instructions.
If you have the Apple iPhone 4S then you will have to make do with iOS 5 for the moment if you want it jailbroken. Owners of the Apple iPhone 5 will have to wait until developers release the jailbreak so they are plain out of luck. It could be that developers are waiting until Apple release iOS 6.1 before they offer the jailbreak. That is of course if they have it right now. If they have we will have to keep our fingers crossed that Apple has not managed to close off any exploits that have already been found. iOS 6.1 beta 4 is out for developers and this is said to have some bug fixes. It is possibly the final one as well.
However at the moment it looks as though the untethered jailbreak for the Apple iPhone 5 will not be here before 2013. This is also when Apple should release the official update to iOS 6.1. For the time being, if you want to update to iOS 6.0.2, then you might as well go ahead as there is no expectation of an untethered jailbreak for the base iOS 6 version coming.
