Only weeks after the third beta of iOS 6 was released, Apple have released iOS 6.1 beta 4 to developers who are registered with them. If you happen to be among the developers and you want to have an attempt at jailbreaking the beta release, then the good news is that there is a tethered jailbreak for iOS 6 beta 4 courtesy of Redsn0w 0.9.15b3.

iOS 6.1 Beta 4 jailbreak instructions

The 4th beta version of iOS 6.1, build 10B5126b, can be had as a delta update and also direct download through the developer portal of Apple, for all of the iOS devices. These include the Apple iPhone, iPad and the iPod Touch. Users who are using betas of iOS 6.1 are able to get the new beta 4 by going into the General – Software updates, section in the settings app.

The delta is 56.5MB; however the whole update, when downloaded from the developer portal is as much as 896MB. Apple has also revealed beta 3 of their Apple TV software, along with the Xcode 4.6 Developer Preview.

The beta 4 for iOS 6.1 can be jailbroken, just as the previous builds were, this is by using Redsn0w 0.9.15b3. This is the tethered jailbreak and it will only work on devices that don’t have the A5 processor. This includes iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4th gen and the iPhone 3GS. All of these have the Limera1n exploit. If you have one of the newest generation of Apple devices, such as the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPads 2, 3, or 4, or the iPod Touch 5th gen or iPad Mini, then this will not work for you.

Of course the jailbreak tutorial is only for developers. So here are the steps that are needed for jailbreaking devices that have iOS 6.1 beta 4:

Download and install beta 4 of iOS 6.1 on your device. You should have iOS 6 on your computer, for your device, if not then you should download it. Download RedSn0w 0.9.15b3

Connect your device to your computer and put it into DFU mode. Then open Redsn0w 0.9.15b3 and the computer should pick up your device. Click on Extras – Select IPSW – head to the iOS 6 firmware file. Redsn0w should identify the firmware.

Go to the Main page of Redsn0w and click on Jailbreak. Wait for the process to complete and then make sure that Cydia has a check mark. Click Next and you will carry out the jailbreak process. Once complete the device will be on the Lock Screen. Put your device back intot he DFU mode.

From the Main page of Redsn0w you should click on Extras – Select IPSW – and choose iOS 6.0 firmware and Redsn0w should identify the firmware. Click Boot tethered and the tethered boot will take place on the device. Wait for the pineapple logo to show on the screen of your device when it boots up.

When the tethered boot has taken place you should be on the Lock screen of the device. Unlock it and then then swipe to the second page. You will then see the Cydia app icon on the page. Open this and let it go through its initial configuration and setup.
