Many people choosing their smartphone upgrades not based solely on specs but also brand name and reputation. This applies even more when you are talking about high end devices that have built their own legacies such as the current Samsung Galaxy S3 and the iPhone 5 that come from a long line of winners. Both of these devices have track records that speak for themselves and you can expect that their successors – the iPhone 5S and Samsung Galaxy S4 – will already have big shoes to fill.
iPhone 5S vs Samsung Galaxy S4: Legion of fans will decide which is the winner, not specs
For this reason many people have already “chosen” which of the two devices between the Samsung Galaxy S4 and iPhone 5S, they will buy, even though the handsets haven’t been released, nor the specs announced. The majority of people owning the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the iPhone 5 will just upgrade inline when the latest models come out. This says a great deal about the hardware, features and popularity of the handsets.
Of course at the moment there is nothing to say that the new devices will have the name of the iPhone 5S and the Samsung Galaxy S4. For now however that’s what we are calling them.
Samsung may reveal the Galaxy S4 at the MWC on February 25th and it is thought that the devices could be on shelves by March or April. This would mean that we would be only months away from seeing the device.
Apple on the other hand surprised many when they revealed the iPad 4 just months after the release of the iPad 3. This has led many to believe that Apple could reveal a new iPhone before next September. This would of course mean that the phone would have a shorter lifespan. Some say that Apple could launch the iPhone 5S in June at the WWDC. In 2012 Apple revealed the iPhone 5, iPad 4, MacBook Pro 13 inch and the iPad Mini and iMac 2013. All of these devices were brought out in the latter half of 2012 and so Apple may wish to spread out the devices they are launching next year, this would bring their best device, the iPhone 5S, to the top of the pack of releases.
Samsung meanwhile may be getting a makeover and they could start off 2013 with a brand new look, which would make them stand out from Apple. This was due to them being accused of copying Apple. Samsung have managed to catch up with Apple when it comes to innovation and tech, an exterior makeover would provide them with a style all of their own and this could help them to topple Apple as the best smartphone designer. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has been criticised in the past thanks to it not having “premium” looks, other than this it competes with the iPhone 5 in all other areas.
There are some fans that will remain loyal to Apple of course, but Samsung have their own followers thanks to the popularity of the Galaxy line-up. Product-Reviews recently asked their 22,000 Facebook fans whether they would go for the iPhone 5S or the Samsung Galaxy S4. Most of them said that they would go for the S4. Of course their choice was solely based on the brand name and what they know of the past devices, as the specs for the new ones haven’t been released yet. The cult following of Apple ensures that Apple are slightly in the lead; they never emphasize their specs and numbers to draw customers in. On the other hand Samsung have always pushed specs and numbers and they will continue in pushing boundaries. Due to this this great things are expected from the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the iPhone 5S.
More than likely the new devices will come with performance and features that will be very evenly matched between the two handsets; this is where reputation and brand name will come into play when choosing between the two.
