There are three handsets topping Christmas lists in 2012, but which one would you like to unwrap on Christmas morning?

iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3 vs LG Nexus 4

The Samsung Galaxy S3 was revealed in May and it went on to be a best-seller for Samsung. The Apple iPhone 5 followed in September, while the LG Nexus 4 was released in November. The LG Nexus 4 comes with a Qualcomm 1.5GHz quad core processor, the Apple iPhone 5 had the dual core 1.2GHz A6 processor and the Samsung Galaxy S3 has the Exynos quad core processor. In the US this happens to be a dual core at 1.5GHz. The Apple iPhone 5 comes with the slowest processor of the three devices, however it is twice the speed of the Apple iPhone 4S. On paper at least, the LG Nexus 4 comes with the best combo, this is a quad core and 2GB of RAM. The Samsung Galaxy S3 meanwhile comes with either the quad core and 1GB of RAM or 2GB of RAM and dual cores. As the LG Nexus 4 has the best of both, it wins.

You can get hold of the LG Nexus 4 in 8GB or 16GB, however it lacks SD card support. The Samsung Galaxy S3 on the other hand is offered in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions and it takes SD card up to another 64GB. The Apple iPhone 5 comes with the same internal storage choices as the Samsung Galaxy S3, but it doesn’t have support for the SD and so the Samsung Galaxy S3 is the winner.

The LG Nexus 4 has Jelly Bean 4.2, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 has been updated to Jelly Bean 4.1, and the Apple iPhone 5 has iOS 6. If you are looking for an OS that is streamlined then iOS 6 may be more suitable. However for flexibility you will want to go for Android. The LG Nexus and the Samsung Galaxy S3 have both got Android. However the LG Nexus will get updates first. Thanks to this being a matter of personal choice, this has to be a draw.

The LG Nexus 4 comes with a True HD IPS Plus display of 4.7 inches and it has 318ppi and a resolution of 1280 x 768. The Samsung Galaxy S3 on the other hand has the Super AMOLED 4.8 inch display with resolution of 1280 x 720 and 306ppi. The Apple iPhone 5 has the smallest display at 4 inches and the IPS screen offers 306ppi and 1136 x 640 resolution. All of the displays are great and of course the best is down to the individual. IPS displays do well in bright light, while the Super AMOLED display has colours that are deep and vibrant. The IPS is the more natural and it performs best in bright light so . The LG Nexus 4 has the largest IPS display in the bunch and so it is the winner.

The LG Nexus 4 should offer around 15 hours of talk time thanks to it having the 2100mAh. The Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Apple iPhone 5 will offer around 8 hours of talk time. AnandTech recently tested the devices and they put the Apple iPhone 5 in first place, the Samsung Galaxy S3 in second place and the LG Nexus 4 in last place.

The LG Nexus 4 has a camera of 8 megapixel and this has autofocus, LED flash and video at 1080p. The device also comes with a camera of 1.3 megapixel. The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with an 8 megapixel camera, which also supports LED flash and autofocus, there is a camera of 1.9 megapixel on the front. The Apple iPhone 5 has a camera of 8 megapixel too and this supports autofocus and LED flash, there is also a camera of 1.2 megapixel on the front. The Samsung Galaxy S3 can record video and take photos at the same time, the LG Nexus 4 has PhotoSphere and the Apple iPhone 5 is great in low light conditions. The best device is a matter of personal choice, however the Apple iPhone 5 does have the best BSI sensor as seen from the low light shots it can take so we’re going to give it to Apple.

The LG Nexus 4 weighs just 129 grams and measures 133.9mmx68.7mmx9.1mm. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is 133 grams and has measurements of 136.6×70.6mmx8.6mm. The Apple iPhone 5 is a lot smaller and lighter as it is 112 grams and measures 123.8mmx58.6×7.6mm. When it comes to the looks and the design it is the Apple iPhone 5 and the LG Nexus 4 that are neck and neck, however thanks to the Apple iPhone 5 being the smaller, lighter and thinner of two handsets, it is the winner.

You can get the LG Nexus 4 for $299 for the 8GB version, while the 16GB version will cost you $349, when bought through the Google Play Store. The Samsung Galaxy S3 starts at around $550 off contract, while the Apple iPhone 5 is $650 without contract. This means that price wise the LG Nexus 4 is the winner.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 along with the LG Nexus 4, both have support for NFC, while the Apple iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S3 both have LTE. Therefore if you want both of these you would have to choose the Samsung Galaxy S3. This puts the Samsung Galaxy S3 in front.

The Apple iPhone 5 is the easiest device to use, while the LG Nexus 4 is the cheapest device and therefore the best value for money. The Samsung Galaxy S3 happens to be a great all-round handset and it comes packed with features and a price tag that is in the medium range.
