There are three top handsets on the market at the moment. These are the LG Nexus 4, Apple iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S3. But which is the best out of these three?

LG Nexus 4 vs Samsung Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 5

The Samsung Galaxy S3 was revealed in May this year and it has been a best-selling device during 2012. The Apple iPhone 5 was revealed by Apple in September and LG followed this up with the Nexus 4, released last month.

The LG Nexus 4 has the quad core processor of 1.5GHz from Qualcomm, while the Apple iPhone 5 has the dual-core processor, the A6. The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with a quad core processor internationally and in the US this is the 1.5GHz dual core processor. The Apple iPhone 5 has the slowest chip, on paper. But it is twice as fast as the processor found on the iPhone 4S. The LG Nexus 4 is fastest on paper; this is due to it having four cores and 2GB of RAM. The Samsung Galaxy S3 also has 2GB of RAM, however it is dual core, while the quad core version has 1GB of RAM. The winner here is the LG Nexus 4.

The LG Nexus 4 has the True HD IPS display of 4.7 inches and it offers 318ppi and resolution of 1280 x 768. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has a 4.8 inch screen, which is Super AMOLED and offers a resolution of 1136 x 640 and 306ppi. All of the screens are superb and the most suitable would all depend on what you want out of the display. The IPS screens are usually preferred over the Super AMOLED ones thanks to them having colours that are realistic and higher brightness levels. The AMOLEDs are known for being vibrant and having blacks that are deep however many find this hyper-real. As the IPS display is the preferred and the LG Nexus 4 has the larger IPS display, it wins over the iPhone 5 and S3.

The LG Nexus 4 is available in either 8GB or 16GB; however it does lack an SD card. The Samsung Galaxy S3 meanwhile comes in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB and you can boost it with SD card up to as much as 64GB. The Apple iPhone 5 has the same internal storage options as the Samsung Galaxy S3; however it lacks the SD card option, which makes the Samsung Galaxy S3 the winner here.

The LG Nexus 4 comes with a camera of 8 megapixel and it supports autofocus, LED flash and videos can be taken at 1080p. The camera on the front is 1.3 megapixels. When it comes to the Samsung Galaxy S3, this too has a camera of 8 megapixel and the one on the front camera is 1.9 megapixel. The camera on the back has autofocus and it also had LED flash. The Apple iPhone 5 features an 8 megapixel camera, which has LED flash, along with autofocus; it also has a camera of 1.2 megapixel on the front. Each camera comes with their own good and bad points. The Samsung Galaxy S3 can record both video and photos at the same time, while the LG Nexus 4 has Photo Sphere. But the Apple iPhone 5 wins here as the camera has the best BSI sensor that makes it the best in low light.

For the OS, the LG Nexus 4 comes with Android Jelly Bean 4.2, while the Apple iPhone 5 has iOS 6. The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with ICS but it has the Jelly Bean 4.1 update now. If you are looking for a device that is very customisable then you would want Android. The Samsung Galaxy S3, along with the LG Nexus 4 are both Android devices, however the Nexus will always get updates before other handsets. Overall the OS is down to personal choice, so this means that it is a draw between the iPhone 5 and LG Nexus 4.

The LG Nexus 4 battery is 2100mAh and you should be able to get around 15 hours of talk time from the device. The Apple iPhone 5, along with the Samsung Galaxy S3 should give around 8 hours of talking. In recent battery tests however AnandTech put the Apple iPhone 5 in first place and this was then followed by the Samsung Galaxy S3 and then the LG Nexus 4.

The LG Nexus 4 comes with a weight of 129 grams and it is 133.9mm x 68.7mm x 9.1mm. The Samsung Galaxy S3 weighs 133 grams and it is 136.6mm x 70.6mm x 8.6mm. Finally the Apple iPhone 5 is just 112 grams and it is 123.8mm x 58.6mm x 7.6mm. In regards to the design and the looks, the LG Nexus 4 and the Apple iPhone 5 are very much the same; however with the Apple iPhone 5 being the lightest and thinnest of the devices, it is the winner.

The LG Nexus 4 will cost $299 if you want the 8GB version and the 16GB version will cost you $349. The Samsung Galaxy S3, without contract, is $550, while if you want the Apple iPhone 5 without contract then you will have to pay $650 for the 16GB version. The LG Nexus 4 has to win, thanks to the price tag.

Both the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the LG Nexus 4 have support for NFC, however the Apple iPhone 5 does not. The Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Apple iPhone 5 both have support for LTE, while the LG Nexus 4 doesn’t. As the Samsung Galaxy S3 has both NFC and LTE, it wins.

If you want a device that is very user friendly then the Apple iPhone 5 may be the best choice. On the other hand if you want a handset that comes with a low price tag and allows for deeper customisation you may wish to look at the LG Nexus 4. The Samsung Galaxy S3 meanwhile is a superb all-round device with some excellent features and a price tag without any compromises in sight.
