iPhone 5 vs. Galaxy S3 vs. Nexus 4: Who Da Boss?

By  |

In May 2012 Samsung revealed the Samsung Galaxy S3 and very quickly it became the best-selling handset of the year. Apple then launched the Apple iPhone 5 in September and this was followed by the launch of the LG Nexus 4 in November. So how do these three favorites of 2012 compare against each other? Let’s find out.

iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3 vs LG Nexus 4

Processor: The LG Nexus 4 came with the Qualcomm quad core processor of 1.5GHz, while Apple put the dual core A6 processor in their iPhone 5 which is the 1.2GHz processor. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has the Exynos quad core processor internationally and in the US it has the dual chip. The Apple iPhone 5 has the slowest of the processors, however it does offer twice the speed of the Apple iPhone 4S. The LG Nexus 4 has the best combination thanks to it having four cores and 2GB or RAM. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has four cores along with 1GB of RAM or it has two cores and 2GB of RAM. As the LG Nexus 4 has both benefits it happens to be the winner.

Software: The LG Nexus 4 comes with Android Jelly Bean 4.2 while the Samsung Galaxy S3 now has Android 4.1. The Apple iPhone 5 has iOS 6 and this is the most streamlined of all operating systems. If it is customisation that you are looking for then you may wish to choose Android. The LG Nexus 4 and the Samsung Galaxy S3 both have Android OS, but you do have to bear in mind that the LG Nexus 4 will get updates first as it is a Nexus handset and is already ahead of the S3 in this respect. The OS is just a matter of personal choice and so this has to be classed as a draw between the Apple iPhone 5 and the LG Nexus 4.

Storage: The LG Nexus 4 can be bought in 8GB or 16GB storage, but it lacks SD card support. On the other hand the Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with 16GB and 32GB and the storage can be expanded up to 64 GB via SD card. The Apple iPhone 5 is in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB but no expansion, which means that the Samsung Galaxy S3 happens to the winner.

Display: The LG Nexus 4 has the True HD IPS screen of 4.7 inches and this has 318ppi and 1280 x 768 resolution. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has a screen of 4.8 inches and 306ppi along with a resolution of 1280 x 720. The Apple iPhone 5 happens to have the smallest display at 4 inches and it comes with 206ppi and 1136 x 640 resolution. While all of the displays are fantastic it isa matter of personal choice. Typically the IPS screens offer more realistic colours as the Super AMOLED displays often look hyper real and they can be over saturated despite the deeper blacks and higher color vibrancy. As the LG Nexus 4 has the larger of the IPS displays, it is the winner in our books.

Battery: The specs sheet says you should get around 15 hours of talk time with the LG Nexus 4 thanks to it having a battery of 2100mAh. The Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Apple iPhone 5 come with 8 hours of talk time. However when AnandTech compared the devices the Apple iPhone 5 was in first place, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 was second and then the LG Nexus 4 followed behind. So the iPhone 5 is the winner.

Design: The LG Nexus 4 weighs 129 grams and measures 133.9mmx68.7mmx9.1mm, the Samsung Galaxy S3 is 133 grams and is 136.6×70.6mmx8.6mm, while the Apple iPhone 5 is just 112 grams and it is 123.8mmx58.6×7.6mm. When it comes down to looks the Apple iPhone 5 is the best, however the LG Nexus 4 comes in very close behind it and the Galaxy S3 leaving a lot to the imagination. As it is smaller, thinner and lighter, the Apple iPhone 5 is the overall winner.

Connectivity: The Samsung Galaxy S3 and the LG Nexus 4 both come with NFC, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Apple iPhone 5 have LTE. If you want to take advantage of both then you would have to choose the Samsung Galaxy S3.

Camera: The camera on the LG Nexus 4 is 8 megapixels and it comes with support for autofocus, video at 1080p and LED flash. The device also comes with a camera of 1.3 megapixels on the front. The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with a camera of 8 megapixels which has support for LED flash and autofocus. The device also has a camera of 1.9 megapixels on the front. The camera of the Apple iPhone 5 is 8 megapixels too and it is great in low light conditions. The handset also has a camera of 1.2 megapixels on the front. All cameras come with good and bad points. The LG Nexus 4 has Photo Sphere while the Apple iPhone 5 cameras cannot be beat in low light, and the Samsung Galaxy S3 is superb for taking photos and videos at the same time. As it comes with the best BSI sensor as proven by the low light shots, the Apple iPhone 5 is the winner.

Conclusion: The Apple iPhone 5 is the easiest handset to use and it does happen to be the best looking. The LG Nexus 4 is the cheapest of the devices and it comes with hardware that is exceptional, although there are some things missing from it but then again look at what you paid for it. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is an all-rounder and it is packed with capabilities and features and comes with a price tag that is decent. So for the best balance it is the S3 which is just right.
