The Samsung Galaxy S3 came out in May of 2012 and the handset went on to become the best-selling device. The Apple iPhone 5 was launched in September, while the LG Nexus 4 came out in November.

iPhone 5 vs Galaxy S3 vs Nexus 4: only the best

The LG Nexus 4 has the 1.5GHz quad core processor from Qualcomm; the Apple iPhone 5 has the A6 dual core 1.2GHz chip, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with the quad core processor from Exynos. In the US this is a dual core chip. The Apple iPhone does have the slowest, but it is still twice as fast as that of the Apple iPhone 4S. The LG Nexus 4 has one of the best combinations as it has quad cores along with 2GB of RAM. The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with four cores and 1GB of RAM or 2GB of RAM and two cores. Thanks to the LG Nexus 4 having the best of both worlds it comes out as the winner.

The LG Nexus comes with Jelly Bean 4.2 and the Samsung Galaxy S3 has Android 4.1. The Apple iPhone 5 comes with iOS 6, and if you want an OS that is streamlined this is the one. However if it is customisation that you are after you will want Android. The LG Nexus 4, along with the Samsung Galaxy S3 are both Android devices. However thanks to the fact that the LG Nexus 4 will get updates first, this may be the better option. Of course OS choice is a personal one and so it has to be a draw between the iPhone 5 and Nexus 4.

You can get the LG Nexus 4 in 8GB or 16GB; however there is no support for SD card. The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB and you can extend storage with SD card up to 64GB. The Apple iPhone 5 comes with the same choices, but it doesn’t have support for SD card. This means that the Samsung Galaxy S3 is the winner here.

The LG Nexus 4 comes with the True HD IPS Plus display of 4.7 inches and this has 318ppi and a resolution of 1280 x 768. The Apple iPhone 5 has a display of 4.8 inches and this is Super AMOLED with 1280 x 720 resolution and 306ppi. The Apple iPhone 5 has the smallest display at 4 inches; this offers 206ppi and resolution of 1136 x 640. All of the screens are excellent and people will choose based on preference. The IPS displays usually offer colours that are realistic while the Super AMOLED screens can look over saturated and hyper real. The LG Nexus 4 comes with largest IPS display and so it wins in my book.

You may get up to 15 hours of talking with the LG Nexus 4 as it has a battery of 2100mAh. The Samsung Galaxy S3 along with the Apple iPhone 5 both offer around 8 hours of talk time. AnandTech however did tests on the devices and they put the Apple iPhone 5 in first place, with the Samsung Galaxy S3 in second and in last place was the LG Nexus 4.

The LG Nexus 4 is 129 grams and has measurements of 133.9mmx68.7mmx9.1mm. The Samsung Galaxy S3 weighs 133 grams and comes in at 136.6×70.6mmx8.6mm. The Apple iPhone 5 is a mere 112 grams and is 123.8mmx58.6×7.6mm. In regards to looks it is the Apple iPhone 5 that comes out on top, however the LG Nexus 4 is very close behind. Thanks to it being smaller, thinner & lighter though, the Apple iPhone 5 comes out as the winner.

The Samsung Galaxy S3, along with the LG Nexus 4 both have support for NFC. The Apple iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S3 both come with support for LTE. This means that if you want both you do have to go for the Samsung Galaxy S3.

The LG Nexus 4 has a camera of 8 megapixels and it comes with support for LED flash, autofocus and video at 1080p. It also has a camera of 1.3 megapixels on the front. The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with an 8 megapixel camera on the back and this supports autofocus and LED flash. There is a camera of 1.9 megapixels on the front. The Apple iPhone 5 also has a camera of 8 megapixel and there is also a 1.2 megapixel camera on the front. All of the cameras have good points. The LG Nexus 4 comes with PhotoSphere; with the Apple iPhone 5 it is excellent in low light; and the Samsung Galaxy S3 takes video and photos at the same time. Thanks to it having the best BSI sensor the Apple iPhone 5 stands out as the winner here.

Of the three handsets, the Apple iPhone 5 is the easiest device to use and the best looking. The LG Nexus 4 is the cheapest of the three handsets and because of its exceptional hardware minus a few missing bits, it is excellent value for money and flexible. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is a superb all-round handset and it comes with more features and capabilities overall than its rivals. All with a decent price tag.
