iPhone 5 vs Nexus 4 vs Galaxy S3: Aging Gracefully

By  |

Last May the Samsung Galaxy S3 came out and it has been a top-selling device. The Apple iPhone 5 was revealed in September and the LG Nexus 4 followed in November. But which of the three devices remains on top today? Let’s find out.

In the LG Nexus 4 is a quad core Qualcomm 1.5GHz processor which is matched with 2GB of RAM. There is the A6 1.2GHz dual core processor in the Apple iPhone 5 along with 1GB of RAM. The hardware of the Samsung Galaxy S3 varies depending on where you live. In the US it comes with 2GB of RAM and it is dual core. Internationally this is a quad core and 2GB of RAM. As the LG Nexus 4 has the best of both it comes out on top.

The LG Nexus has a screen of 4.7 inches, with a resolution of 1280 x 768. The Apple iPhone 5 display is 4 inches and it comes with the resolution of 1136 x 640. The Samsung Galaxy S3 meanwhile has a resolution of 1280 x 720 and a large 4.8 inch display. Both the Apple iPhone 5 and the LG Nexus 4 come with IPS display, the Samsung Galaxy S3 has a Super AMOLED display, which some people believe can be hyper real. Some people say that it doesn’t look as good when outside either. Personally I would choose the IPS display over the Super AMOLED and as the LG Nexus 4 has the largest screen, this would be my choice.

The LG Nexus 4 comes in choices of 8GB or 16GB but there is no support for SD card. The Apple iPhone 5 is available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB and this doesn’t have support for SD card either. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is offered in 16GB and 32GB and it comes with SD up to 64GB. This means that it possible to have a total of 96GB.

The LG Nexus 4 should offer 15 hours as it comes with a battery of 2100mAh. The other devices both offer around 8 hours of use. In real life tests the Apple iPhone 5 came out on top with the Samsung Galaxy S3 behind it. The LG Nexus 4 came in last place.

If you want a device that has NFC it would have to be the LG Nexus 4 or the Samsung Galaxy S3. Anyone wanting LTE would have choices of the Samsung Galaxy S3 or the Apple iPhone 5. Anyone wanting both would be left with the Samsung Galaxy S3.

All phones have a back camera of 8 megapixels and the cameras can record 1080p video with autofocus and LED flash. The LG Nexus 4 along with the Apple iPhone 5 has a camera of 1.2 megapixels, the Samsung Galaxy S3 has a camera of 1.9 megapixels. The Apple iPhone 5 is the winner for the BSI sensor and this means that photos are superb in low light. The LG Nexus 4 comes with Photosphere, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 is known for taking video and photos at the same time. It doesn’t beat the sensor of the iPhone though.

The LG Nexus 4 comes in with a weight of 129 grams and it has measurements of 133.9mmx68.7mmx9.1mm. The Samsung Galaxy S3 measures 136.6×70.6mmx8.6mm and it has a weight of 122 grams. The Apple iPhone 5 is just 112 grams, which makes it the lightest of the devices, it is also the smallest and thinnest and this makes it the winner.

If you want Android the LG Nexus 4 comes with pure Android 4.2.2 and with the Nexus name it should get faster updates than the Samsung Galaxy S3. The Apple iPhone 5 comes with iOS 6, it is stable and streamlined. Anyone who likes to personalise their device will be happy with Android. So you might want to choose between the Apple iPhone 5 or the LG Nexus 4. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is the only handset that might not get updates that are new over the years.

The Apple iPhone 5 is a great looking device and iOS 6 is easy to use. The camera of the Apple iPhone 5 cannot be beaten, but it does lack for connectivity choices and hardware performance as was evident in benchmarks. The OS is restrictive for some too who will find personalization limited. The LG Nexus 4 on the other hand is superb for anyone who is on a tight budget but it lacks large storage choices and it doesn’t have LTE. So if you want a device that is an all-rounder it would have to be the Samsung Galaxy S3. The handset comes with everything you would expect, including largest storage choice, LTE, NFC, a battery that can be removed, microSD support, S-features, the biggest display of the 3 and a price tag that is decent. You can get it for around $480 as the Samsung Galaxy S4 has been revealed and pushed the price of the S3 down to below $500. While it may be the oldest of the devices, it remains the winner.
