iPhone 5 vs Nexus 4 vs Galaxy S3: Why S3 Keeps The Crown

By  |

The Samsung Galaxy S3 was released into the smartphone world in May 2012 and then the Apple iPhone 5 followed on in September. LG then released the LG Nexus 4 in November to complete an excellent line up of handsets. The Samsung Galaxy S3 might be the old timer here but it has aged well.

For the processor the LG Nexus has the Qualcomm at 1.5 GHz. The Apple iPhone 5 comes with the dual core A5 of 1.2 GHz. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has dual core in the US and quad core internationally. The Apple iPhone 5 comes out as the slowest but it has twice the speed of the iPhone 4S. The LG Nexus 4 meanwhile has the quad cores along with 2GB of RAM. If you want the Samsung Galaxy S3 with quad cores you only get 1GB of RAM. This means that the winner has to be the LG Nexus 4.

The LG Nexus 4 comes with Jelly Bean 4.2, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 has ICS but can be updated to Jelly Bean 4.1. The Apple iPhone 5 has iOS6.1, which is the latest. While iOS is the more user friendly OS, if you want customisation then it has to be Android. The LG Nexus 4 and the Samsung Galaxy S3 both comes with Android. The LG Nexus will be the first to get updates, so you would have to choose between the LG Nexus 4 or the Apple iPhone 5.

The LG Nexus 4 comes with 8GB or 16GB and you would have to manage with your choice as the device does not come with support for SD card. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is excellent for storage as it comes in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB and there is also support for SD card. The Apple iPhone 5 matches internal storage, however it does lack SD card support. This means that the Samsung Galaxy S3 wins.

The LG Nexus 4 has a True HD IPS display of 4.7 inches, which comes with a resolution of 1280 x 768 and 318 ppi. The Apple iPhone 5 display is just 4 inches and has 306 ppi, which is on an IPS display. The Samsung Galaxy S3 offers a display of 4.8 inches and has a resolution of 1280 x 720. While all displays are great there are some good and bad points. The IPS screens typically offer colours that look the most realistic. The Super AMOLED display can look over saturated. The LG Nexus has the biggest screen of the IPS devices and this could be a better solution over the smaller display of the Apple iPhone 5 and the Super AMOELD display of the Samsung Galaxy S3.

For batteries the LG Nexus 4 provides up to 15 hours as it has a battery of 2100mAh. The Apple iPhone 5 comes with a battery that would provide around 8 hours, as would the Samsung Galaxy S3. When AnandTech made tests, they found that the Apple iPhone 5 came out in first place, followed by the Samsung Galaxy S3 and then the LG Nexus 4.

The measurements of the LG Nexus are 133.9 mm x 68.7 mm x 9.1 mm and it is 129 grams. The Samsung Galaxy S3 weighs 135 grams and measures 136.6×70.6 mm x 8.6 mm, while the Apple iPhone 5 comes in as the winner thanks to it being the lightest along with the thinnest of the devices. The handset has great looks, but the LG Nexus 4 is not far behind it.

If you have a need for NFC you would need to choose between the LG Nexus 4 and the Samsung Galaxy S3. LTE is only available on the Samsung Galaxy S3 or the Apple iPhone 5. If you wanted LTE and NFC then you would need to choose the Samsung Galaxy S3.

For cameras you get an 8 megapixel on the back of all handsets, which supports video at 1080p. The LG Nexus 4 comes with a camera on the front of 1.3 megapixels, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 has a 1.9 megapixel camera that supports LED flash. The Apple iPhone 5 features a camera of 1.2 megapixel camera. The LG Nexus 4 comes with Photo Sphere, the Samsung Galaxy S3 is able to take photos and video at the same time, while the Apple iPhone 5 has the best BSI sensor. The Apple iPhone 5 wins thanks to the best BSI sensor.

Out of all handsets the Apple iPhone 5 comes with iOS and so it is the easiest to pick up, it also comes with the best design. The LG Nexus 4 has the best price tag and it is packed with hardware that is great. On the down side it doesn’t come with LTE and has poor storage. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is the old man in the pack, however it an all-round handset and it comes with all the features expected of a flagship and is price fairly , which does make it the winner overall.
