iPhone 5 vs Nexus 4 vs Galaxy S3: How To Choose

By  |

While there are many excellent phones on the market at the moment, three of the most talked about are the iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy S3 and the LG Nexus 4. So which of these superb handsets should you choose?

iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3 vs LG Nexus 4

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is the old man of the three as it was launched during the summer and it has been very popular. Apple revealed the iPhone 5 in September and then LG launched the Nexus 4 just last month.

The LG Nexus 4 has the 1.5GHz quad core processor and the iPhone 5 comes with the A6 dual core processor of 1.2GHz, meanwhile the Samsung Galaxy S3 has the dual core 1.5GHz processor in the US and internationally it has the quad core processor. Out of the three, on paper, it is the iPhone 5 that is the slowest. However, on saying this it is twice as quick as the iPhone 4S. On paper the LG Nexus 4 is the fastest handset thanks to it having four cores and 2GB of RAM. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has the quad core and 1GB of RAM or dual core and 2GB of RAM and so the winner here is the Nexus 4 from LG.

The LG Nexus 4 has the True HD IPS 4.7 inch display with 318ppi and resolution of 1280 x 768. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has the display of 4.8 inches, which is Super AMOLED and has 306ppi and is 1280 x 720. The iPhone 5 has a display of 4 inches which is 1280 x 720 and has 4.8 inches. The iPhone 5 comes with a screen of 4 inches and it is the smallest of handsets. The IPS display comes with a resolution of 1136 x 640 and it has 306ppi. Of course which of the displays is best for you will depend on what it is that you want from a phone. The Super AMOLED display does offer deep blacks and it has vibrancy. IPS on the other hand offers the more realistic looks and it happens to be the easiest of the displays to read in sunlight, hence why it is my pick.  The IPS displays of the iPhone 5 and the LG Nexus 4 win here, however the outright winner is the Nexus 4, which has the larger size as well.

The Nexus 4 comes in 8GB or 16GB versions and there is no SD card support. The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB and you can add on another 64GB via SD card. The iPhone 5 also supports the same storage options; however it doesn’t have support for SD card. The winner happens to be the Samsung Galaxy S3, with the iPhone 5 in second place and the Nexus 4 in last place.

The LG Nexus 4 comes with an 8 megapixel camera and this is capable of taking video at 1080p and it supports LED flash and has autofocus. The phone comes with a camera of 1.3 megapixel on the front. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has an 8 megapixel camera and it comes with a 1.9 megapixel camera on the front. The back camera has support for LED flash and autofocus. The iPhone 5 meanwhile has an 8 megapixel camera that also has LED flash support and autofocus and there is a 1.2 megapixel camera on the front. All of the cameras have good and bad points. The Samsung Galaxy S3 camera takes video and photos at the same time, while the LG Nexus 4 has PhotoSphere and the iPhone 5 happens to be the best when taking photos in low light. Thanks to the BSI sensor for excellent low light shots, the iPhone 5 camera wins.

Of course when choosing a device one of the things you have to take into account is the operating system. The LG Nexus 4 comes with pure Android in the form of Jelly Bean 4.2, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 has Jelly Bean 4.2 and the iPhone 5, iOS 6. If you want a device that is streamlined and which is the most stable, then the iPhone 5 is the best, with iOS 6. For customisation it has to be one of the two Android devices. The LG Nexus 4 will be the first to get updates, and this is a great incentive to get the handset over the S3. However iOS vs Android is a matter of preference and it is a draw.

The LG Nexus 4 has a 2100mAh battery and you should get around 15 hours from the device. The Samsung Galaxy S3 and the iPhone 5 have batteries that should last for around 8 hours. AnandTech did compare the batteries in real world tests and the iPhone 5 was the winner for its battery life. The Samsung Galaxy S3 was second and in last place for its battery was the LG Nexus 4.

The LG Nexus 4 is 133.9mm x 68.7mm x 9.1mm and 129 grams, the Samsung Galaxy S3 is 136.6mmx70.6mmx8.6mm and 133 grams, while the iPhone 5 is 112 grams, which makes it the lightest of the devices and it measures 123.8mmx58.6mmx7.6mm. In regards to design and great looks the LG Nexus 4 and iPhone 5 are the best, however while the LG Nexus 4 matches the iPhone for looks, the iPhone 5 is the thinnest and the lightest of  handsets and so it wins.

You can get the 8GB version of the LG Nexus 4 for $299 when you buy it at the Google Play Store unlocked. You will have to pay $349 for the 16GB version of the device. If you want to get your hands on the Samsung Galaxy S3 you will have to pay $550 if you want it without contract; and the iPhone 5 off contract would cost you $650. This means that the winner in the price category has to be the LG Nexus 4.

You can get NFC on the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the LG Nexus 4, but the iPhone 5 doesn’t have it. The iPhone 5 and Galaxy S3 have LTE but the Nexus 4 doesn’t. Therefore if you want both the Samsung Galaxy S3 would be the winner.

The bottom line is that if you want a user friendly handset with great looks and superb camera then you will want the iPhone 5. If you are on a tight budget then the LG Nexus 4 will come out on top as it does provide excellent hardware despite flailing with some good bits (storage & LTE). If it’s a great all-round handset that you are looking for then you should choose the Samsung Galaxy S3 as it comes with everything from great hardware to flexibility at a fair price.

Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Nintendo Wii, PC, iPhone and Android games keep Berke busy at work all day. Honestly though we’re not sure why we’re paying him as it should be the other way around.
