By  |

The Samsung Galaxy S3 came out in May last year and this went on to become the top-selling handset of 2012. Apple revealed the Apple iPhone 5 in September and the Google Nexus 4 made an appearance in November. So which of these top-end smartphones is the best?

iPhone 5 vs Google Nexus 4 vs Samsung Galaxy S3

The Google Nexus 4 has a 1.5GHz Qualcomm processor; the Apple iPhone 5 has the 1.2GHz A6 processor, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 has a quad core processor internationally, while in the US this is a dual core. Out of them all the Apple iPhone seems to be the slowest, but then it has twice the speed of the Apple iPhone 4S. The LG Nexus 4 comes with the best of the combinations thanks to it have 2GB of RAM along with a quad core processor. Meanwhile the Samsung Galaxy S3 has 2GB of RAM with a quad core processor. Thanks to the 2GB of RAM and the quad core processor, the LG nexus is the winner.

The LG Nexus has Jelly Bean 4.2, the Samsung Galaxy S3 4.1 and the Apple iPhone 5 has iOS 6. Anyone who wants a fast device may go for iOS 6, however if customisation is your thing you could choose Android. Both the LG Nexus 4 and Samsung Galaxy S3 have Android, but the LG Nexus 4 has pure Android and this generally means it will get updates faster. The operating system is just a matter of personal choice and so this is a draw.

The LG Nexus 4 is available in 8GB or 16GB, but it lacks support for SD card. You can get the Samsung Galaxy S3 in 16GB, 32GB or 64GB and the device has support for SD card up to 64GB. The Apple iPhone 5 comes with exactly the same internal storage choices, however it doesn’t have SD card support. This means that the winning device is the Samsung Galaxy S3.

The LG Nexus 4 offers a 1280 x 768 resolution on its 4.7 inch True IPS display, with 318ppi. The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with a 4.8 inch Super AMOLED screen, with 306ppi and 1280 x 720 resolution. The Apple iPhone 5 has the smallest display at 4 inches, which offers 1136 x 640 resolution and gives 306ppi. While all of the screens are great, personal choice will be the deciding factor here. However the IPS screen may offer more realistic colours, while Super AMOLED tends to look hyper real to some people. The LG Nexus 4 along with the Apple iPhone 5 both have displays of IPS, but the LG Nexus 4 display is bigger, which makes the handset stand out.

You will be able to get up to 15 hours of talktime with the 2100mAh battery of the LG Nexus 4, the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Apple iPhone 5 offers around the same at 8 hours. Recently AnandTech tested the handsets are they put the Apple iPhone 5 in first position, the Samsung Galaxy S3 next and in last place the LG Nexus 4.

The LG Nexus 4 comes with measurements of 133.9mmx68.7mmx9.1mm and tips the scales at 133 grams. The Apple iPhone 5 is light at 112 grams and measurements of 123.8mmx58.6×7.6mm, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 is 133 grams and 136.6×70.6mmx8.6mm. As the Apple iPhone 5 is the smallest of the handsets, it wins. You will have to find around $299 if you want the 8GB version of the LG Nexus 4, if you want 16GB then you will pay around $349, if you buy it in the Google Play Store. To get your hands on the Samsung Galaxy S3, unlocked, it costs around $550, while an Apple iPhone 5 off contract will cost about $650. The winner here is clearly the LG Nexus 4.

Both the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the LG Nexus 4 have support for NFC, while the Apple iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3 have LTE. If you want a handset with both, you will have to purchase the Samsung Galaxy S3.

The LG Nexus has a camera on the back of 8 megapixel, it has LED flash, video at 1080p and autofocus, there is also a 1.3 megapixel camera on the front. The Samsung Galaxy S3 offers an 8 megapixel front camera and a 1.9 on the back. The camera comes with autofocus and LED flash support. The Apple iPhone 5 camera is also 8 megapixel, while Apple put a 1.2 megapixel on the front. Each of the cameras has their good points. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is able to take both photos and video at the same time, the LG Nexus 4 comes with Photo Sphere and the Apple iPhone 5 is superb in low light, beaten only by the Nokia Lumia 920. The BSI sensor of the Apple iPhone 5 puts it ahead and makes it the winner.

The Apple iPhone 5 is the easiest of the three handsets to use, while the LG Nexus 4 comes with the lowest price tag and you do get value for money. If it’s an all-round handset with a reasonable price tag and with the least amount of drawbacks, you would have to go for the Samsung Galaxy S3.
