iPhone 5 vs Nexus 4 & Galaxy S3: ‘Murica vs Korean Giants

By  |

In May of last year the Samsung Galaxy S3 was revealed and it went on to become the best-selling device. Apple then followed up with the Apple iPhone 5 and the LG Nexus 4 followed on. But which of these handsets is the best?

The LG Nexus 4 has the Qualcomm 1.5GHz processor, the Apple iPhone 5 has the A6 1.5GHz processor and the Samsung Galaxy S3 has the quad core processor internationally but in the US it is the dual core. The Apple iPhone 5 happens to be the slowest of the devices, but it beats the iPhone 4 as it is twice as fast. The LG Nexus 4 has 2GB of RAM and quad core, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 has quad cores it only has 1GB of RAM and if you want 2GB then you are stuck with dual cores. The winner therefore has to be the LG Nexus 4.

If it is a pure Android device that you want there is nothing to beat the LG Nexus 4 as it comes with Jelly Bean 4.2. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is also an Android device, it had ICS when it came out but it has been given the update to Jelly Bean. The Apple iPhone 5 has the latest iOS6.1. If you are looking for a device to give you customisation then it does have to be Android. For a streamlined OS it is iOS. The LG Nexus will be updated the fastest but the OS is down to personal choice and in this case you may wish to choose between the LG Nexus 4 and the Apple iPhone 5.

You can get the LG Nexus 4 in 8GB or 16GB but there are no external storage choices. The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB and there is support for SD card up to another 64GB. The Apple iPhone 5 comes with the same options for external storage but it doesn’t support SD card. This means that the Samsung Galaxy S3 has to be the winner.

There is a 4.7 inch True HD IPS display of 1146 x 640 resolution on the LG Nexus 4 and it offers 218ppi. The Apple iPhone 5 comes with 4 inches and 1136 x 640 resolution with 206ppi. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has a 4.8 inch Super AMOLED display with 306ppi and resolution of 1136 x 640. All of the handsets have displays that are superb however IPS displays do usually offer colours that look more realistic and the Super AMOLED displays look over saturated. The LG Nexus comes with the larger IPS display and this makes it the winner.

You might get up to 15 hours of use with the LG Nexus 4 as it has a battery of 2100mAh. The Apple iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S3 will both offer up to 8 hours.

The LG Nexus 4 is 129 grams and is 133.9mmx68.7mmx9.1mm, the Samsung Galaxy S3 is 112 grams and it measures 136.6×70.6mmx8.6mm and the Apple iPhone 5 happens to be the lightest device. This means that it is the winner, but the LG Nexus 4 doesn’t come too far behind.

If you need NFC then you have the choice of the LG Nexus 4 or the Samsung Galaxy S3. However if you want LTE you would have to go for the Samsung Galaxy S3 or the Apple iPhone 5. Should you want both then you need to pick the Samsung Galaxy S3.

All handsets offer a back camera of 8 megapixels and LED flash, along with autofocus and 1080p video recording. The LG Nexus 4 has a front camera of 1.3 megapixels, the Samsung Galaxy S3 has a 1.9 megapixel camera and the Apple iPhone 5 comes with the 1.2 megapixel camera. Each camera offers something unique. For the LG Nexus 4 this comes by way of Photo Sphere. The Apple iPhone 5 has the best BSI sensor and the Samsung Galaxy S3 is best known for its ability to take photos and video together. As the Apple iPhone 5 comes with the better BSI sensor it has to be the winner.

The Apple iPhone 5 happens to be the easiest of the handsets to use and it does have looks that are hard to beat. For price the LG Nexus 4 is the best, but it lacks LTE or large storage and loses some points for it. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is the best all-round handset as it has all the features expected of a flagship at a fair price. So while it may be the oldest handset, it is the best.
