You always hurt the one you love, apparently. The average iPhone owner, it seems, can relate to this. Gadget insurance company SquareTrade has found that a whopping 30% of iPhone owners have damaged their phones within the last year.
Thinner, lighter iPhone 5 may not be a good thing
The report, which was based on data from 2,000 customers, found that iPhones get three times more abuse, soakings and scratches than iPads. As SmartMoney points out, “Perhaps part of the reason some 2 million new iPhone 5 were preordered in the first 24 hours is that many customers didn’t have a choice: Their older models needed replacing.”
People worry about subway and street corner thefts, but it now looks like accidents are the main threats to the iPhone. “We were astonished at how many people drop their phones in the toilet,” said SquareTrade’s CMO Ty Shay.
A lot of pre-ordered iPhone 5 units will be replacing cracked iPhone 4Ss, suggest TechBargains.com’s president Yung Trang. SquareTrade found that around 11% of iPhone users have a cracked phone, with 6% have had to tape up their device as they wait for a replacement. The younger owners are the worst culprits, with 50% of the under-35s damaging their iPhones, according to SquareTrade.
iPhone love is a pricy affair, as broken iPhones have, since 2007, cost Americans around $5.9 billion, according to SquareTrade. This bill includes repairs, insurance deductibles and replacements for “cracked, dropped, pummeled, kicked and water-damaged iPhones.”
Apple doesn’t pay out for careless handling or breakage unless the owner has additional coverage. The company charges $600+ for an iPhone 5 off contract, and the company didn’t want to comment.
Phone makers are in a race to make thinner, faster phones with “little regard for durability,” says Ty. The iPhone 5 is 18% thinner and 20% lighter than the 4S. Apple has also widened the screen from 3.5” to 4”, which makes it more likely to crack. However, having glass on only one side might make it a bit stronger.
