There are so many handsets on the market right now that choosing which one to add to your Christmas list may be very difficult. Three of the most hyped are the iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy S3 and the LG Nexus 4, and here we take a look at each to see which is the best one for you.
iPhone 5 vs LG Nexus 4 vs Samsung Galaxy S3
The Samsung Galaxy S3 has been out since summer and up to now it has been one of the best-selling handsets of 2012. The iPhone 5 came out in September and the LG Nexus 4 has just been announced and is due out later this month.
The LG Nexus 4 has a quad core 1.5GHz Qualcomm processor. The Samsung Galaxy S3 also has a quad core processor at 1.4GHz internationally and dual core 1.5GHz in the US. The iPhone 5 meanwhile has the dual-core A6 processor at 1.2GHz. It doesn’t match the other two handsets for speed, but the processor is twice as fast as the one in the iPhone 4S. On paper it is the LG Nexus 4 that is ahead thanks to the fact that it is quad core and it also has 2GB of RAM.
The LG Nexus 4 has a display of 4.7 inches which is True HD IPS and comes with a resolution of 1280 x 768 and has 318ppi. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has a 4.8 inch Super AMOLED screen of 1280 x 720 and it has 306ppi. The iPhone 5 has a display of 4 inches and is 1136 x 640 with 326ppi. All devices have great displays and the best one is a matter of what you want. IPS screen like the one on the Nexus 4 & iPhone 5 does seem to be better in sunlight thanks to the high brightness levels and colours that are realistic. The AMOLED display offers deep blacks and colours which are vibrant, but some say that they are hyper-real. The LG Nexus 4 display is a good size and personally this is the one that I would choose over the iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S3.
The LG Nexus 4 comes in a choice of just 8GB or 16GB. This may not be enough for some people as there is no SD card support. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is offered in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB and it comes with support for SD card up to 64GB. The iPhone 5 has the same storage options as the S3, however it doesn’t support SD card. The winner here has to be the Samsung Galaxy S3.
The LG Nexus 4 has a camera of 8 megapixels and it supports recording of 1080p. It also comes with a 1.3 megapixel front camera and it has PhotoSphere panorama. The Samsung Galaxy S3 also has a camera of 8 megapixels and video recording at 1080p. It has support for LED flash and it also has a camera of 1.9 megapixels on the front. The iPhone 5 isn’t left out when it comes to cameras and its 8 megapixel camera can also record in 1080p and has LED flash and autofocus and it has a camera on the front too. All cameras on all handsets are among the best. The S3 can take video and stills at the same time, and PhotoSphere on the LG Nexus 4 is great. The iPhone 5 has the best sensor in low light. When it comes to cameras only you can choose which is the best is for you.
The operating system is often one of the reasons why you choose a handset over another. The LG Nexus 4 has the pure Google experience and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. The Samsung Galaxy S3 will be getting updated to Jelly Bean, however at the moment it has ICS. The iPhone 5 runs on iOS 6, which is the latest from Apple. If you want a device that will get updates faster than the others then it has to be the LG Nexus 4 or the iPhone 5. Updates aside, The Samsung Galaxy S3 and LG Nexus 4 offers plenty of customisation, while the iPhone 5 “just works” and its streamlined setup means you will be changing just the wallpaper and ringtones before you’re on your way.
When it comes to batteries the LG Nexus 4 should offer you around 15 hours as it comes with the 2100mAh battery. The Samsung Galaxy S3 should give around 11 hours when talking and the iPhone 5 has the smaller battery of 1440mAh and this gives around 8 hours of talking on 3G. AnandTech however ran tests and the iPhone 5 was in front surprisingly, with the S3 in 2nd place and then the LG Nexus 4.
The LG Nexus 4 is 139 grams and comes in at 133.9mm x 68.7mm x 9.1mm. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is 133 grams and 136.6mm x 70.6mm x 8.6m. The iPhone 5 meanwhile is 112 grams and is 123.8mm x 58.6mm x 7.6mm, which means that it is the lightest and the smallest of the three handsets. When it comes to the design, the LG Nexus 4 and the iPhone 5 draw as they both have superb designs.
You can get the LG Nexus 4 at the Google Play Store and the 8GB will cost you $299 and the 16GB is $349. Both of the handsets are unlocked. The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes in at $550 plus if you want the unlocked handset and right now the iPhone 5 is not unlocked but there is rumour of it coming around Black Friday with a base price tag of $650.
The LG Nexus 4 and the Samsung Galaxy S3 both have support for NFC, and the iPhone 5 doesn’t. The iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S3 support LTE and the Nexus 4 lacks it.
The bottom line is that they are all great devices. If you have other iOS products then the iPhone 5 is the best for you. If you want something with an easy learning curve, great camera and have the budget, Apple’s phone is ideal. However if you still want great hardware but but don’t mind trading storage space and LTE for a low price tag then the LG Nexus 4 is a “too good to be true” value for money smartphone. And finally we have the Samsung Galaxy S3 which falls right in between. It has the best of both worlds as it offers everything that the iPhone 5 has (ample storage, LTE) plus it has a price tag in the middle of the iPhone 5 and the Nexus 4.
