Ever since Apple revealed the Apple iPhone 5 in the fall of 2012 fans have been waiting to hear about a jailbreak for iOS 6. Hackers have been looking into a jailbreak but thanks to the increased security of Apple the jailbreak is taking a long time coming. However following months of hard work there is finally an untethered jailbreak for iOS 6, but the key to its release is Apple releasing iOS 6.1 reports CultOfMac.
iPhone 5 iOS untethered jailbreak public release awaiting 6.1 update?
The untethered jailbreak could essentially be released to the public right now. However hackers want to wait and see if Apple has quashed exploits when they release iOS 6.1. If not and the iPhone 5 untethered jailbreak still works then the developers will release it just after the release of iOS 6.1.
iOS 6.1 has been in the beta stages for some months, with the 4th beta expiring on 28th January. When this happens Apple will either have to reveal another beta or they will launch the final version, which is more likely.
The final version will be released for everyone, not just developers, but developers will have a last minute look at it to make sure that their apps work with it.
It does make sense to hold back on the jailbreak until the new iOS is released as releasing it now could waste the exploits the jailbreakers found as Apple would have time to patch them before releasing iOS 6.1. Developers such as Pod2g, PlanetBeing, Pimskeks and MuscleNerd now have to wait until Apple release iOS 6.1 before going public with the untethered jailbreak.
One developer said that in the past Apple have added in heavy security in their final version. Therefore they don’t know if the same might happen this time around. However they are hoping that the iPhone 5 jailbreak will still work. Cyril said that they had focused on the 6.1 beta 4 and they are confident that it will work with the final version of 6.1. There is a very slim chance that it might not and in this case the developers would have to go back to the drawing board.
It is thought that all iOS 6 devices, including both the Apple iPhone 5 and 4S will be included in the jailbreak. The four behind the jailbreak are part of a new hacking group with the name of Evad3rs. They will be revealing the untethered jailbreak for iOS 6 under this name.
