When Apple released the new iPhone 5 with iOS 6 they made it even harder to jailbreak the phone and OS, thanks to security being stepped up. However a trio is thought to be moving closer to an untethered iOS 6 jailbreak.
iPhone & iPad untethered iOS 6 jailbreak
The hackers recently spoke out at the Hack in the Box conference and they are well known for jailbreaking iOS. The team have in the past used many combinations of exploits which had given the access to installing software that is unauthorised. The practice of jailbreaking an iPhone or iPad is legal within the US, however it does void the phones warranty.
Jailbreaking is popular with owners of the iPhone and iPad as it allows them to use software other than what is available in the App store as well, which Apple closely guard.
With each new release of iOS it has become harder to break and the software used in past jailbreaks does not work with the new iOS 6. One French hacker who goes by the name of pod2g said that so far iOS 6 has him stumped.
Jailbreaking an OS is not easy as it takes a lot of skill and many hours of testing and patience. David Wand said that there were a couple of kernels which could essentially lead to an untethered jailbreak, however more than one key was needed to unlock that door. To create a jailbreak more than one exploit is typically needed. They went on to say that they thought they had the needed conditions, however before the jailbreak is released there are many technical steps it has to go through.
It was reported on Wednesday that they had installed Cydia on a device running iOS 6 using the kernel mode exploit. This is an app store for iOS that is unauthorised. The team used their own custom designed debugging app to deliver the kernel exploit. Apple have done away with many of the weaknesses on the OS, however there are still exploits in the kernel.
The challenge is on and it engrossing said Wang. He compared it to doing a hard Sudoku puzzle, saying that you just have to use the brain. He said that he was confident that the untethered jailbreak for iOS 6 would come about within the next few weeks.
