iOS 6 Untethered Jailbreak Update (iPhone & iPod Touch Only)

By  |

The burning question now is how to jailbreak the iOS 6 firmware and also how to install Cydia onto the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5. So, what gives over on Planet Jailbreak? Is the iOS 6 solution any nearer or should we go ahead and update to iOS 6.0.1 and wait?

iOS 6 untethered jailbreak status update

iPhone dev teams are working hard to find and crack exploits in the iOS 6 firmware. There’s been some progress, but only for the iPhone 3GS, the iPhone 4 and the iPod Touch 4G. If you have one of these devices, then you can jailbreak iOS 6 on it. You need to download Redsn0w onto your PC, set it up and install it, then plug your device in and follow instructions.

If you have the iPhone 4S or the iPhone 5, you’ll have to wait. The iPhone Dev Team got an iOS 5 jailbreak for the 4S out earlier this year, but Absinthe (as it was called) has been the only one yet. If you’ve upgraded your 4S to iOS 6, then you’ll have to wait for the next one. Same goes if you have the iPhone 5, obviously.

The tethered iPhone 4S and 3GS jailbreak, as well as the tethered jailbreak for the iPod Touch 4G on iOS 6 is out. It has limits, though – if your battery dies or you need to restart the phone again, you’ll have to go through the jailbreaking process all over again.  The untethered solution isn’t out yet, and there’s no news about one.

Developers seem to be stumped by iOS 6, with hackers strangely silent about whether they’re cracking iOS 6 or not. If you really can’t wait, or own an iPhone 4S, then revert back to iOS 5. iPhone 5 users are kinds stuck. Some people think that jailbreakers were waiting for iOS 6.0.1 to come out before releasing their work, suggesting that a jailbreak is already in place. With iOS 6.0.1 already out, hackers may be ready to reveal the exploits they found in iOS, that is if the 6.0.1 patch didn’t close it.
