Facebook’s latest managerial recruit has been plucked from the Apple tree. Chris Weeldrever, previously a UI design manager at Apple, is now a product design manager for the world’s favourite social network. Weeldrever joined Apple in 2003 before leaving in February, so says his LinkedIn profile. Facebook had been looking for a design manager for a while.

The job was advertised as mainly a management role, but the company needed someone who wasn’t scared to get his hands dirty at the drawing board.
“Candidates must have strong visual and interaction skills and the ability to help shape product strategy,” according to the job ad. “Candidates that can build their own designs are preferable.”
Weeldrever’s LinkedIn page says his skills include UI design, interaction design, user experience, mobile application design, mobile applications, product design and product development. It seems that he’s got the right stuff.
Facebook has had a hard time in the mobile market. Its mobile apps have been slammed for their lack of user-friendliness and quality, but even so, more and more people are going online from their mobiles. Facebook needs to work out how to swim in this mobile world.
