Mazda has made it very clear that they are not looking to offer another RX model with a rotary engine in the near future but that does not mean we will not see the rotary engine anymore.
Confirming the rumors we heard a few weeks ago, Mazda announced at the Tokyo Motor Show that they are working on the rotary engine and that the rotary engine will return as a range-extender and battery juicer for their first electric vehicle. The new Mazda electric vehicle will be arriving in 2019.
Of course, they also announced that the RX-7 successor with rotary engine is not going to happen by 2020.
Besides working on a new electric engine, Mazda also added that they will be releasing a few plugin hybrid models based on the existing models and that these vehicles will arrive around 2020.
While this is not where we want the rotary engine to be, it is nice to see that Mazda has not given up on it yet.
