If you have your eye on the 2017 Volvo XC90 and the BMW X5 you are going to have a difficult time choosing between them as both gained scores that were very similar according to carconnection. So which would you choose?

For engines the Volvo XC90 offers a new one and it comes with a price tag that is lower in the T5 version. This is a 250 horsepower engine by way of the 2 litre turbocharged 4-cylinder that comes with the 8 speed automatic. If you go for the T5 you get front-wheel drive fitted as standard but you can choose all-wheel drive. You should get around 22mpg combined and you can opt for the plug-in hybrid which has the gas engine and 60 kilowatt electric motor, with a range of 13 miles. The Volvo XC90 offers great handling and road holding is predictable, however on the downside you do notice the vibrations and noise.

The starter engine on the BMW X5 is the turbocharged inline-6 with 8 speed automatic transmission and this offers up 300 horses. The V8 can reach 60 in only 4.7 seconds or you can go for the X5 xDrive 40e plug-in hybrid with the 2 litre engine and the electric motor. You get 14 miles on electric and the BMW offers one of two Sports modes ensuring it feels like a BMW.

For safety features the Volvo XC90 came out with an excellent rating according to NHTSA. The BMW X5 received a top five star rating and both vehicles offer up plenty of electronic active safety systems.

Both the Volvo XC90 and the BMW X5 have personalities that are very different. The Volvo offers luxury for seven people, while the BMW is sporty and can carry up to five people.

The Volvo offers a third row of seating that is better than the one in the BMW and if you choose the Exellence version you are going to have to pay over $100,000. Either of the two would make a great choice and you are going to find it difficult to choose between the two.
