2017 Shootout – Audi RS3 vs Mercedes-AMG CLA45

By  |

The Audi RS3 is taking on the Mercedes AMG CLA45. The CLA45 has for a long time been in a class all of its own in the US but things may be about to change.

The Mercedes AMG CLA45 offer up all-wheel drive and it has the 2 litre turbocharged four cylinder engine which offers up 375 horses. There really isn’t anything that has been able to compete against it. However at the Paris Auto Show the Audi RS3 was revealed and it offers 400 horses and goes from standing still to 60 in just 4 seconds.

The Mercedes AMG CLA45 does offer up impressive figures on paper when you bear in mind that the displacement engine is small. The Audi RS3 has the new turbocharged engine and this is the 2.5 litre five cylinder. Both of the engines are offered with seven speed dual clutch and come with all-wheel drive.

If you look at the specs on paper it does look as though the Audi RS3 takes the advantage over the Mercedes AMG CLA45. However when it comes to the performance figures this is a different story.

The Audi RS3 takes 4.1 seconds to reach 60mph from standing still and as it offers 25 more horses it should beat the Mercedes AMG CLA45. However the CLA45 also reaches 60mph in 4.1 seconds. The top speeds of the vehicles are 174mph for the RS3 and 167mph for the CLA45, these speeds are based on the performance packages of each vehicle as the standard model offers 155mph.

The Audi RS3 offers 354 pound feet torque at 1,700 to 5, 850rpm and the Mercedes AMG CLA45 offers 350 pound feet at 2,250 to 5,000rpm. Thanks to the Audi offering the wider spread it should make it slightly faster.

So it does look as though the Audi RS3 is in a position to be able to contend for the crown of the Mercedes AMG CLA45, but whether it will actually be able to steal it away is another matter. What do you think?
