The 2017 Mazda CX-5 is going up against the Volkswagen Tiguan and it looks like there is one clear winner, but which is it?
The Volkswagen Tiguan offers up state of the art equipment and it does happen to be the most practical vehicle that you can buy today. The Mazda CX-5 on the other hand is the older of the two vehicles but you cannot deny it has a cabin that is beautiful.
The Mazda CX-5 is definitely a superb crossover and it offers great handling and comes with a redesign. At the top of the range is the 2.2 D Sport Nav Auto and this comes with a price tag of $31, 195. It has the 2.2 litre diesel engine and this offers up 420 torque. It weighs in at 1,628kg and this is 100kg lighter than the Volkswagen Tiguan.
The Mazda CX-5 is the faster of the two but not by much and it is the most responsive with an engine that is powerful and smooth along with responding well to the throttle. The steering is good and the controls offer great feedback, however the grip is somewhat lacking. It’s not as comfortable inside as the Volkswagen Tiguan due to it having stiffer springs and you can hear the road noise.
The Volkswagen Tiguan is the second generation revealed in 2016 and this was a huge step up. It offers the 2 litre diesel engine producing 187 horsepower and 400 torque and this is the most powerful of the engines in the line-up. It offers four-wheel drive and gets power from the 7 speed DSG gearbox, which takes it from stand still to 60mph in just 8.4 seconds.
While the transmission of the Volkswagen Tiguan is faster than that of the Mazda CX-5, it still feels a bit on the sluggish side. It isn’t as engaging to drive as the CX-5 but it does come with more grip and thanks to the Dynamic Chassis Control adaptive dampers, the body control is tenser.
The Volkswagen Tiguan offers a ride quality that is good and it managed to take bumps with a plushness with a soft edge. It comes with an off road setting and this helps to improve the grip, however thanks to the ground clearance it really isn’t a vehicle that you can take off the road. The Tiguan does come out ahead for quietness in the cabin.
The Volkswagen Tiguan is the winner here thanks to it offering driving dynamics that are superb along with being practical and having running costs that are reasonable. The Mazda CX-5 is a worthy competitor and it does offer a drive that is fun and engine that is efficient.
