2017 Chevrolet Camaro vs Ford Mustang: Don’t Trust Sales Figures
The Camaro and Ford Mustang are two vehicles that have been going up against one another for many years and with each new redesign the competition just keeps getting hotter. The Mustang might be well ahead in sales but performance wise both vehicles are too close to call but the 2017 Mustang is going to offer Apple CarPlay technology, so this could push it even further ahead.
The Ford Mustang was given a redesign for 2015 and it brought with it an independent rear suspension that was sophisticated along with drivetrains that are powerful and efficient. It also came with plenty of technology. The 2016 version of the Chevrolet Camaro came onto the market offering a premium platform, shedding 200 pounds, plus plenty of equipment.
While many people still refer to them as being pony cars, they are in fact sports cars, but which comes out ahead?
Both share a retro design that is modern and both have haunches that are muscular and offer a stance that is wide. The Chevrolet Camaro has a look that is menacing thanks to the chopped trop gun-slit greenhouse, while the Ford Mustang offers a graceful look thanks to it canopy. The Mustang wins for quality and comfort as it offers that bit more room.
The Chevrolet Camaro offers superb handling thanks to it losing weight and the Alpha platform has taken it to a brand new level, the ride has been boosted by the Magnetic Ride Control adaptive dampers.
The Ford Mustang has the independent rear suspension and it has great manners on the road along with potential on the track. It is nimble and forgives very easily. However the Camaro comes out ahead due to the steering, which is razor sharp and it having a rear end that is planted firmly.
The Chevrolet Camaro offers the V6 335 horse engine taking it to 60mph from standing still in 5 seconds. The Camaro SS offers 455 horses and the same of torque and can reach 60mph in only 4 seconds.
The Ford Mustang has the V8 5 litre offering 435 horses and 400 torque, taking the vehicle from standstill to 60mph in 4.5 seconds. There is also the V8 5.2 litre reaching 60mph in 4 seconds.
For fuel economy the Chevrolet Camaro V8 offers 20mpg combined and the Ford Mustang 5 litre offers around 19mpg, so there really isn’t much in it. For safety it is the Mustang that comes out ahead with its 5 stars overall NHTSA score.
Both the Ford Mustang and the Chevrolet Camaro are great choices of sports cars and it is tough choosing the winner. The composure of the Camaro is the best, but the Mustang offers more space in the cabin. But which would you choose?
