2016 Ford Explorer RS: A Hellcat Cherokee Killer?

By  |

Earlier this year it was confirmed that the RS range for the Ford series of vehicles was expected to increase. With that said all eyes were on a Ford Fiesta RS. However earlier this week Ford Australia confirmed that there were no plans for Fiesta to undergo this treatment.

So then what other Ford vehicle could benefit with the RS treatment? Word on the street is it would be the Ford Explorer. Over the years the Explorer design language has been getting more sportier than utility. But when it comes to actual performance it is still more an SUV than anything else.

With the recent rise in popularity of SUVs that perform like sports cars, it wouldn’t be crazy to imagine a Ford Explorer RS. We saw the likes of the Bentley Bentega, Porsche Macan, Jaguar F-Pace and even Tesla Model X push the limits of what SUVs can do. And if that wasn’t close enough to home for Ford, then the recent Jeep Grand Cherokee Hellcat certainly is.

What do you think of a 2016 Ford Explorer RS? Do you think a Jeep Grand Cherokee Hellcat rival here on US soil is what consumers want? Sound off in the comments section below.

An RS version of the Explorer could be interesting if the details were really dialed-in. I remember Saleen did a version of the Explorer that was neat but the buyers just weren’t there.

As a former Mustang Cobra owner and current Grand Cherokee SRT owner I’d give it a thorough, tire-melting review 🙂
